pumpkin carving

Its pumpkin carving time again! Saturday we headed to the pumpkin patch to get a few and I decided to try my hand at pumpkin sculpting – something I’ve never done before. Pumpkins are surprisingly easy to sculpt, once you get the tough skin off. I have new respect, however, for some of the awesome pumpkin sculptures I’ve seen, since it is a time consuming process, and after you’ve been working long enough for your hand to start cramping, you realize the pumpkin is already beginning its process of decay while you’re working on it. I think next year I’m going to make sure I have the right tools before I start. Here’s the finished witch, inspired by the wicked step-mother from Snow White:

Of course, even though I toiled for hours on mine, John much preferred Phillip’s vampire cat:

Which honestly did look cooler lit:

I even got a pumpkin for John to work on – but once he discovered it involved reaching in and pulling out the squishy guts, he completely lost interest.
